Overview
Nashville Superspeedway is a 1.33-mile concrete oval in Lebanon, Tennessee, east of Nashville. It opened in 2001, closed to racing after 2011 and came back in 2021 with its first NASCAR Cup Series race. All three national series now race there on the same weekend each year.
The concrete is the point. At 1.33 miles, Nashville is the longest concrete oval on the NASCAR schedule. Races there have been long and unpredictable: in 2024 the Cup race went 31 laps past its scheduled distance, through five overtimes, the most extra laps in Cup Series history. (Overtime is the extra-lap finish NASCAR uses when a caution falls near the end.) No driver has won the Cup race there twice in its six runnings.
History
Dover Motorsports built Nashville Superspeedway and opened it in 2001. The NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, the Craftsman Truck Series, ARCA and IndyCar all raced there from the first season, but crowds dwindled and the Cup Series never came, and Dover Motorsports stopped holding events after the 2011 season.
In June 2020, Dover Motorsports announced that it would move one of the two Cup Series dates at its Delaware track, Dover, to Nashville. Kyle Larson won the first Cup race there on June 20, 2021, leading 264 of 300 laps and beating Ross Chastain by 4.335 seconds. Later in 2021, Speedway Motorsports bought Dover Motorsports, and with it both the Dover track and Nashville Superspeedway, in a deal valued at about $131.5 million.
