Overview

South Boston Speedway is a four-tenths-mile asphalt oval located in Halifax County, Virginia. Known locally as "America's Hometown Track," South Boston has been a pillar of grassroots stock car racing in the Southeast since the late 1950s. The track sits in the heart of Virginia's Southside region, a rural corridor between Danville and the North Carolina border that has produced generations of racing talent.

The tight, flat layout demands patience, clean air management, and precise car setup. Passing is difficult but not impossible — drivers who can work traffic and manage tire wear over long runs have a significant advantage. The 200-lap distance of the Virginia Triple Crown opener at South Boston rewards consistency and mechanical reliability as much as raw speed.

History and Significance

South Boston was founded by the Rice family, who continue to operate the facility. Cathy Rice, the current promoter, was one of the three co-founders of the Virginia Triple Crown in 2012 alongside Clay Campbell (Martinsville) and Bill Mullis (Langley). The track has hosted weekly Late Model Stock Car racing for decades and remains one of the most active short tracks on the East Coast.

The track has produced or developed many drivers who went on to NASCAR careers. Its weekly program is a training ground for young racers learning the craft of oval racing.
